From the Race Car to the Pits

The system uses two compact telemetry modems: one installed in the car and the other positioned with the pit crew.

The CAR modem connects to a compatible ECU, display or logger through its RS232 telemetry output. It then transmits the data over the 4G LTE cellular network to the PIT modem.

The PIT modem provides an RJ45 Ethernet connection for integration with the team’s pit-side telemetry setup.

This creates a live connection between the moving race car and the team monitoring it from the pits, provided suitable 4G coverage is available at the circuit or event location.

Why Live Telemetry Matters

Reviewing logged data after a session remains an important part of vehicle setup and development. However, it can only show the team what has already happened.

Live telemetry changes when that information becomes available.

Depending on the sensors and channels configured in the car, the pit crew may be able to monitor engine temperatures, pressures, electrical voltage, engine speed and other important vehicle data as it is generated.

This can help the team recognise changes or unusual readings sooner.

If a temperature begins climbing, a pressure reading starts falling or an electrical value becomes unstable, the crew may have an opportunity to investigate or call the driver into the pits before a developing issue becomes more serious.

Live information can also help teams make better-informed decisions during testing, qualifying and racing. Rather than relying only on radio feedback from the driver, the crew has objective vehicle data available at the same time.

Telemetry does not replace post-session analysis. It adds another layer of information that can be acted on while the car is still circulating.

A Compact Modem Designed for the Car

Space and weight are always important considerations when installing electronics in a race car.

The RACE CAR telemetry modem uses a compact aluminium enclosure that is well suited to motorsport installation. It operates from a 9–30 VDC power supply and is fitted with a robust Autosport connector for reliable integration into a professional race car wiring system.

One Pit Modem Can Support Multiple Cars

The PIT modem receives the telemetry data and connects to the team’s pit-side equipment through Ethernet.

For teams running more than one vehicle, a single PIT modem can receive data streams from multiple cars. This makes the system particularly useful for multi-car operations that want to monitor their vehicles from one pit-side location.

Each car requires its own appropriate car-side telemetry setup, but the ability to use one PIT modem provides a more practical and scalable solution for larger teams.

SIM cards and active cellular accounts are required for the telemetry system to operate over the mobile network.
